Dinner at Taneal's

Saturday 18 February 2012, Harare

Taneal's niece, Vernon, Nancy, Denziel, Jim, Taneal, niece

The CUMC Team left on Friday 17 February.  Jim and I spent two days in Harare, where we were able to see Taneal Kamuzungu, our friend who works at United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR-NGO) in Harare.  She invited us to her apartment for dinner on Saturday night.  She picked us up at the hotel just after 6 pm.  After stopping for a final grocery stop of mushrooms and soda, we drove to Taneal’s sister’s house where we picked up dishes, and pots and pans for the dinner.  Along with her sister Nancy, we headed back to central Harare where we picked up the chef, Vernon.  Vernon is studying at a culinary school and dreams of someday opening his own restaurant.  Arriving at her 2d floor apartment, we were greeted by her nephew and 2 nieces.  Her nephew, Denziel, was visiting for the day and is Nancy’s son.  The 2 nieces live with Taneal and go to school.  It is a 1 bedroom apartment, with a living room, bathroom and a small kitchen.  Vernon prepared the meal with help from the other 5 Zimbabweans - all 6 in the tiny kitchen at the same time – slicing, dicing, learning and watching.  Jim and I were only allowed to sit in the living room and watch the proceedings from the sofa, while South African TV stations broadcast on the TV.  Vernon prepared a 3 course meal: mushroom soup, salad, and an entree of vegetables, beef & peppers and roasted chicken.  It was all delicious and a great honor to be invited into a Zimbabwean's home.
